The retail landscape in Europe is undergoing a remarkable transformation. With the rise of e-commerce and the resilience of physical stores, European shoppers are demonstrating a clear preference for a hybrid approach to shopping according to The State of Shopping 2024 survey, conducted by ShopFully in collaboration with Offerista Group. Let’s break down the five emerging trends and review insights for retailers seeking to navigate this evolving environment.
The Best of Both Worlds: Physical and Digital Shopping
Surprisingly, 92% of European consumers still prefer shopping in physical stores, primarily due to the ability to see, touch, and try products before purchasing. However, it’s not a simple case of online versus offline. Nearly 80% of shoppers research products online before heading to a store to finalise their purchase. This growing demand for an integrated shopping experience presents a huge opportunity for brands and retailers to develop a seamless omnichannel strategy, blending the benefits of both digital and in-store interactions.
“The blend of digital research and in-store experiences offers shoppers a level of confidence and satisfaction they can’t always find online alone,” said Stu Conroy, Director of Innovation + E-commerce. “For retailers, this hybrid model isn’t just a trend, it’s the new standard. Embracing an omnichannel approach that leverages both physical and digital strengths will be key to winning over today’s informed, value-conscious European customer.”
Quality and Price Outweigh Brand Loyalty
Brand loyalty is relatively low across Europe, with only 16% of shoppers consistently sticking with a single brand. Instead, shoppers are motivated by quality, price, and past experiences. Nearly 60% of respondents say that promotions influence their purchasing decisions, indicating that European shoppers are increasingly resourceful, actively seeking out the best deals rather than waiting for traditional sales seasons.
Not surprisingly, 42% of consumers consider the environmental impact of their purchases, and more than half are willing to pay more for eco-friendly products, highlighting a shift towards sustainability despite cost concerns.
Maximising Every Touchpoint
In an age where consumers are bombarded with information and choices, nurturing relationships at every stage of the customer journey is crucial. From online browsing to the in-store experience, maintaining a strong presence across all touchpoints is essential for brands and retailers. Digital catalogues, for instance, are a popular research tool for 56% of consumers before heading to physical stores.
While promotions and the ability to see or try products remain key drivers for in-store shopping, immediate possession of goods is a lesser priority for most.
The Click and Collect Advantage
Click and collect has become a popular service across Europe, with 85% of users making additional in-store purchases when picking up their orders. In countries like France, this figure is even higher, showing that click and collect presents a significant opportunity for retailers to boost in-store sales. Germany, however, has fallen behind in its uptake of this service.
As the European retail landscape continues to shift, brands and retailers must adapt to the changing preferences of consumers. A strategic approach that blends the benefits of both physical and digital channels will be key to driving sales and maintaining customer loyalty in this evolving market.
